Sandra Henry’s change-making leadership experience spans the utility, private, and nonprofit sectors. Sandra’s technical depth in energy efficiency and clean energy is complimented by her commitment to collaboration, diversity and inclusion, and the systems change we need to create a sustainable future.
Currently, Sandra is Chief Sustainability Officer and the Illinois Director of Operations for Walker-Miller Energy Services. WMES is a pioneering, African American-owned company driving meaningful diversity in the energy efficiency industry in the Midwest. Sandra leads the company’s utility experience and sustainability efforts with the goal of integrating sustainability into all WMES operations.
Sandra previously served as Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of Chicago, where she led the charge to advance the city toward 100 percent clean energy by signing on to Sierra Club’s Ready for 100 campaign, committing Chicago to electrify its bus fleet by 2040 and to a community-wide transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035. She led the effort to build ground-mounted solar systems on city-owned underutilized land and led the charge for the city to be selected for the Bloomberg Philanthropies American Cities Climate Challenge. Before her work for the City of Chicago, Sandra demonstrated her commitment to deep energy efficiency in buildings by leading Accelerate Performance, Slipstream’s national initiative to scale performance-based procurement for commercial new construction. Sandra also understands the importance of creating space to have crucial conversations and led the development of a Net Zero summit for private developers in Chicago that now serves as a platform for convening meaningful market transformation conversations with key stakeholders.
For more than 20 years, Sandra designed and managed energy programs for utilities in Minnesota and Illinois. She embraces market-driven strategies that integrate with the green building movement. Sandra has extensive knowledge of applied sustainability practices that drive measurable outcomes. She is a high-performance leader who has the unique ability to engage stakeholders at multiple levels and inspire constituents to embrace sustainable practices. She is Past Chair of the USGBC Illinois chapter and served as Greenbuild 2018 Host Committee Co-Chair.
