Yuri Alekseevich Matrosov, 1933-2010
Yuri Alekseevich Matrosov, a leader in the field of energy efficiency in buildings in Russia, passed away on Sunday morning, 7 February, in Moscow. He was 76 years old.
Up to the time of his death, Yuri Alekseevich served as the head of the microclimate and building energy conservation laboratory at the Research Institute for Building Physics in Moscow. He also served as Division Leader at the Center for Energy Efficiency, a leading nongovernmental agency. He stood at the very top of his profession, as one of Russia's greatest authorities in building science and as a tireless advocate for the environment. His expertise, as well as his profound commitment to improving his country and our planet, led to many important advances in Russia and the former USSR. Most notably, Yuri was the main author of numerous regional and federal building codes for thermal performance, including the Russian federal code SNiP 23-02-03 "Thermal Performance of Buildings" and analogous national codes in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Moldova. Yuri invented the Energy Passport for buildings, a system now widely used across Russia and the CIS to calculate and document energy performance of buildings. He authored more than 280 papers and articles, as well as a seminal book, published in 2008, entitled Энергосбережение в зданиях. Проблема и пути её решения (Energy Conservation in Buildings. The Problem and Paths to Solve It).
Yuri was the leader for all of IMT's projects in the former USSR. We mourn his passing, but remain ever grateful for his brilliant professional work and more importantly, for his kindness, patience, and enduring friendship.
