IMT Proposed Changes to IgCC Public Version 2

IMT is pleased to refer readers to three proposals we, through the efforts of our consultant, Gary Klein of Affiliated International Management, LLC, were instrumental in getting into Public Version 2 of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC PV2). All three of these proposals relate to the water, energy and time efficiency of hot water distribution systems.

Section 607.5

Provides an easy way to remember the amount of insulation to install on hot water piping that results in virtually identical heat loss per foot, regardless of pipe diameter. The proposed changes simplify the original proposal and combines the insulation requirements for piping in space conditioning and water heating systems into one section. This proposal saves both water and energy.

Section 608

Describes the most energy efficient pump controls for use with hot water circulation systems. The proposed changes remove language that duplicates wording already in the International Plumbing Code. This proposal will save energy, both for keeping the loop warm and for operating the pump.

Section 702.8

Limits the allowable volume of water in the hot water distribution system between the source of hot water and the fixtures. There are criteria for the allowable volume from a water heater or a boiler to the fixtures and a separate, smaller volume from a circulation loop or an electrically heat traced line to the fixtures. The proposed changes simplified the original language so that it will not be necessary to calculate the volume in the piping for most systems by providing a maximum length from the source to the use for both cases for each nominal diameter of pipe. The new proposal adds a new requirement that will significantly improve the ability to get hot water at public lavatory faucets, which typically have very low flow rates (as required by Federal law since the mid-1990s). This proposal will save water, energy and time.
